ACH return code R02: what “account closed” means and how to fix it

A blank envelope in a brass tray beneath a closed teal bank window.

Short answer

R02 means the bank returned an ACH payment because the account it was sent to or drawn from had been closed. Ask the company that initiated the payment to confirm the return and any planned retry, then update the details through its secure process.

Find which payment came back and check who needs to update the bank account.

You switched banks, but an automatic bill payment still points to the old account. If the biller reports R02, pull up the payment record and check which account it used before you submit a replacement.

What does ACH return code R02 mean?

R02 means the account used for the ACH entry was previously active and has since been closed. It can affect a debit, such as a biller pulling money from your old account, or a credit, such as payroll sending money to it. Check the payment record for the amount, date and last four digits of the account.

R01 points to insufficient funds. R03 means the bank could not locate the account using the details supplied. If the message only says the payment failed, ask for the exact return code before changing your payment details.

What to do before you send another payment

Start with the organization that initiated the ACH payment. A biller can tell you how it will collect a returned debit, and payroll can tell you how it will reissue a returned deposit.

  1. Match the return to the original payment using its date, amount and payment reference. Ask the sender for an ACH trace number if you need help identifying it.
  2. Ask whether the original payment has been returned and whether a retry or replacement is already scheduled. If a bill is due soon, ask how the return affects the due date.
  3. Update the bank details through the sender’s official portal or verified support channel. Confirm whether the new account needs verification or fresh authorization.
  4. Confirm who will start the replacement and when. If the company is already handling it, check that plan before making a separate payment.
  5. Keep the confirmation and watch for the new payment in both the company’s records and the bank account.

Example: a bill still points to your old account

Suppose your $85 internet bill was scheduled to debit a checking account you closed last week. The biller reports R02. Contact it with the bill date and payment reference, confirm whether it plans to collect the $85 again, and ask whether changing autopay also updates this month’s unpaid bill.

If the biller confirms the debit was returned and asks you to pay manually, use its verified payment screen and save the receipt. Check that the next scheduled bill shows the new account.

For a Bitcoin order, ask the purchase provider how the return affects the original order and whether you need a new quote before authorizing another debit. The ACH return-code guide explains other codes and how to follow the payment and order separately.
