You’ve been asked for proof of address and already have a bank statement on your phone. Before uploading it, open the file and check what it actually shows. An old home address, missing name or outdated statement can mean another round of paperwork. A few checks now can help you submit a useful document the first time.
When can a bank statement work as proof of address?
A statement can connect your name with the address your bank records. The receiving organization decides which documents it accepts and how it reviews them. Find its proof-of-address instructions for your country, account type and current request before choosing a file.
For example, Chase’s checking-account preparation guide lists a bank statement showing your name and residential address among possible address documents. Coinbase’s U.S. document table also lists bank statements, under a proof-of-address heading requiring issuance within the last three months. These examples explain why the document is useful; apply the requirements of the organization reviewing yours.
Address verification, bank-account ownership and source of funds answer different questions. If the request concerns who owns an account, see the account-holder guide. If it concerns where a deposit came from, use the source-of-funds guide to prepare the relevant records.
What should be visible on the statement?
Open the statement itself and compare it with the request. Check the document’s date rather than the day you downloaded it. A fresh download of an older statement still carries the older statement date.
Scroll across the table to see all columns.
| Detail | What to look for | If something is wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Your name | A name that the reviewer can match to your application or verified profile | Resolve a name change or abbreviation through the bank and the reviewer’s stated process. |
| Your residential address | The home address required by the request, including a unit number where applicable | Correct outdated bank records or choose another accepted document showing your current home. |
| Statement date | An issue or statement date within the recipient’s required window | Download a newer statement or request an accepted alternative. |
| Bank identity | A recognizable issuing institution and the document’s identifying details | Use the official bank-issued file rather than recreating the information yourself. |
| Readable, complete file | Required pages, clear text and an accepted file format | Download again or make a clearer scan using the recipient’s instructions. |
A mailing address can differ from where you live. If the statement shows a P.O. box, check the residential-address rule before uploading. Kraken’s document guidance, for example, requires the name and address and excludes P.O. boxes. Keep that policy attached to Kraken rather than applying it to every service.
How recent should it be, and can you use a PDF?
Use the age limit in the actual request. Kraken’s published guidance requires a document dated less than three months before submission. Coinbase’s proof-of-address table specifies documents issued within the last three months. Other services can use a different window, so keep the request’s wording with your document.
An official electronic statement is a useful file to start with. Sign in to your bank’s established website or app and look for statements or documents. Select the correct account and recent statement, save the file and open it to confirm the name, address and date. The reviewer’s upload instructions determine whether it accepts that PDF or requires a particular capture method.
Chase’s statement instructions describe choosing the account, year and statement in its app to open a PDF. On its website, the statement list offers Open or Save controls. Your bank’s menus may differ; use its official help if you cannot locate the document.
A balance-screen screenshot may leave out the address, statement date or issuing details needed for review. Prefer the official statement when the request allows it. If you are asked for a photograph or scan, capture the full document clearly and follow the page-count, format and size instructions shown in that request.
Example: a recent statement after a move
Fictional example: Alex Rivera moves on October 20, 2026 and submits an address-verification request on October 31. The reviewer accepts bank statements issued within the last three months and requires the current residential address. Alex’s October 15 statement still shows the previous home.
Scroll across the table to see all columns.
| Document | What Alex finds | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| October 15 bank statement | Recent enough, but shows the previous home | Update the bank record and ask which new document can show the current address. |
| May 31 bank statement | Outside this reviewer’s three-month window | Choose a newer accepted document. |
| Current lease in Alex’s name | Shows the new address | Check whether this reviewer accepts that lease and whether it needs particular signatures or pages. |
The October statement passes the example’s date check, while its address needs attention. Update the bank’s record through its normal process and ask when a new statement or suitable address letter will be available. Keep the issued document intact, including its original date and address.
Bank of America directs customers to Online Banking to update contact details. Ask your bank how a change will appear on future documents. If your submission deadline comes first, choose another document from the reviewer’s accepted list.
What if it is a joint account, or the bills are in someone else’s name?
For a joint account, check whether the statement displays your name and current address. If it displays only the other owner, ask the bank for a document identifying you and ask the reviewer which format it accepts. Keep the account’s actual ownership names on the record.
If you live with family or share a home, look for documents you already hold in your own name. A lease, government correspondence or another official record may be an option when the receiving service lists it. Kraken, for example, includes certain government documents and signed rental agreements among its proof-of-address choices. Use the list for the specific service and request.
If none of your documents meets the request, explain the situation to the reviewer before ordering a replacement. Ask which alternative it accepts for a new resident, a joint household or a person whose utilities are paid by someone else. Keep its written answer so you know what to obtain.
Can you hide the balance or account number?
Read the recipient’s masking instructions before changing a copy. A statement contains private financial information, and a reviewer may need particular fields to validate the document. Ask which account-number digits, balances or transactions you may cover and whether it requires the original file or all pages.
Crypto.com’s published proof-of-address instructions permit masking bank account or card numbers while requiring the document to stay otherwise unaltered and fully captured. That is a specific provider example. Follow the instructions of the service receiving your document, and retain the original bank-issued file privately.
Verify the request inside the service’s established account or support process before uploading. Use its designated document channel and keep the submission reference. Passwords, PINs and one-time codes belong outside the document packet. The ACH-safety guide covers checks for unexpected payment or account-information requests.
What should you ask if the statement is rejected?
Use the rejection reason to choose the next step. A missing address calls for a different document; a blurred scan calls for a clearer copy; an outdated record calls for an update. Keep the error wording and submission reference rather than repeatedly sending the same file.
A message you can adapt
‘My proof-of-address submission [reference] was rejected for [exact reason]. The document is a bank statement issued [date] showing [describe the name/address issue without attaching sensitive details here]. Which requirement is missing? Will you accept [alternative document], and what date window, pages, format and masking instructions should I follow?’
If the reviewer accepts a bank letter instead, request the exact facts it needs. Chase lists an address-information letter among its verification options. Our bank-verification-letter guide helps you prepare a precise request to your own bank.
How does this fit into preparing a Bitcoin purchase?
A purchase provider may request address, identity, account-ownership or source-of-funds records for different review questions. Read the specific request and keep the supporting document with its submission reference. Complete any payment authorization as its own step after reviewing its amount and scope.
The ACH buying guide brings together bank-account preparation, payment permission, settlement and delivery questions. For a wire-funded request, see the wire-transfer guide. Fiat2Bitcoin’s purchase service remains in launch preparation; use the current document requirements of the provider handling your actual review.
