Bank verification letter: what to request before buying Bitcoin

Short answer

A bank verification letter confirms specified account information from the bank or banking provider. Its contents vary: it may identify account owners, account details, status or a balance. Before requesting one for a Bitcoin purchase, ask the reviewing provider exactly what it needs and whether it accepts that document. A letter does not authorize payment or prove that money or Bitcoin has been delivered.

Request the right document the first time, distinguish account details from proof of funds, and share only through the verified review process.

A document request can arise while preparing an ACH Bitcoin purchase or a Bitcoin purchase by wire transfer. This guide explains how to clarify and obtain a letter; it is not a statement that every Fiat2Bitcoin purchase requires one or that any particular document will be accepted.

Clarify the requested account facts, obtain the issuer’s official document, and submit it through the verified review channel.
A bank letter confirms its stated facts; payment and delivery need separate evidence.

What is a bank verification letter?

It is an official document that confirms the account facts the issuer is willing and able to verify. The title alone is not enough to know its contents. An account-details letter may show ownership and routing information, while a balance confirmation answers a different question.

Chase lists several consumer letter types, including routing-number, address and custom letters. Its custom options can include owners, account type, status and balance information. Those are examples of one bank’s choices, not a universal document format.

A display nickname is separate from the official ownership record; the account-nickname guide explains what to verify. Start with the reviewer’s question: “Which account is this?”, “Who holds it?” and “Where did the money come from?” require different evidence. A letter naming an account owner may answer the first two without explaining the origin of a recent deposit.

What information should you ask the letter to contain?

Clarify the request before ordering a document
Item to clarifyWhy it mattersQuestion for the reviewer
Account holder or legal business nameLinks the document to the reviewed person or entityWhich owners or signers must be shown?
Account identifier and payment detailsIdentifies the exact account being reviewedIs a masked number acceptable, and which routing details are needed?
Issue date and account statusShows when and what the issuer confirmedHow recent must the letter be?
Balance or account historyAnswers a separate funds question if requestedIs a balance needed, or only account ownership?
Issuer format and authenticityHelps the reviewer assess the documentIs a downloadable PDF sufficient, or is another form required?

These are questions to resolve, not a list of fields to expose automatically. Ask about the required information, accepted format, delivery channel and any deadline. Do not request a full account history when the reviewer only needs a limited account confirmation.

How do you get a bank verification letter?

  1. Open your bank’s official app or website independently, or contact its verified support or branch.
  2. Describe the purpose and the exact fields the reviewing provider requested.
  3. Ask whether a downloadable account letter is available or whether a custom request is required.
  4. Confirm any fee, expected turnaround and permitted recipient before placing the request.
  5. Review the issued document for the correct account, name and requested information.
  6. If a fact is wrong or missing, ask the issuer to correct or reissue the document. Keep the original file.

Relay’s published process illustrates a downloadable account-specific PDF. Its listed contents include the business name, selected account details, account type, opening date and a signature. Relay also describes a custom-letter route when the standard document lacks required information. This is an example, not an endorsement or a claim that Relay is a bank.

Other institutions use different procedures. Wells Fargo’s verification service separates requests by purpose, including balance inquiries and audit confirmations. Do not submit an unrelated mortgage or audit form merely because it contains the words “verification of deposit.”

A simple request you can adapt

You can ask your bank: “I need an official letter confirming the account information requested by a payment provider. Can you explain which letter type includes the required fields, whether there is a fee, and how I can obtain it securely?” Supply the actual requirements through the bank’s approved channel.

This wording is a request for a document, not a bank-letter template. The bank or banking provider must issue its own confirmation. Do not create letterhead, add a signature, edit an account owner or change a balance yourself.

If the receiving provider asks for different wording after you obtain the letter, clarify the gap first. Ask the issuer whether it can provide the additional confirmation, or ask the reviewer which legitimate alternative it accepts.

Is it the same as a voided check, statement or proof of funds?

No. A voided check supplies printed payment details. A bank statement records activity over a period. A letter confirms the particular facts it states. The reviewer decides whether one can replace another for the specific request.

“Proof of funds” can refer to evidence of an amount, while source of funds concerns how money was obtained. A current balance letter may not explain the transaction that created that balance. Ask what needs to be demonstrated instead of treating those labels as interchangeable.

Account confirmation is also separate from ACH authorization. Sharing a letter does not describe the amount, timing or scope of permission to debit an account. Read any payment consent presented alongside document collection.

What should you check before sharing it?

Confirm that the request belongs to your actual provider and order. Open the verified account or support channel yourself. A message asking for account documents, changed wire instructions or a new upload link should not be trusted solely because it uses a familiar logo.

Ask which information may be masked and whether all pages are required before redacting. Do not conceal required ownership or transaction facts. Use the designated secure channel, and keep a record of what was requested and submitted.

A letter about your paying account is not the recipient’s wire instructions. For a wire purchase, verify the separate request-specific destination through the wire-instruction checklist. Do not copy an ACH routing number from an account letter into a wire form without confirming that it is appropriate.

After the document review, check what remains: payment consent, funding, clearance, purchase terms and Bitcoin delivery can each require separate confirmation. Acceptance of paperwork completes only the review step it was meant to support.
