Source of funds for a Bitcoin purchase: what it means and how to prepare

Short answer

Source of funds means where the money for a particular transaction originated, including the activity that generated it and how it reached the paying account. A bank balance alone may not explain that origin. Ask the reviewing provider which records it needs, and submit accurate documents through its verified secure process.

Separate the source of a payment from overall wealth, organize a clear explanation, and understand what a document request does—and does not—establish.

This guide supports preparation for a wire-transfer Bitcoin purchase or an eligible ACH Bitcoin purchase. Fiat2Bitcoin remains prelaunch. It does not publish a universal document list or promise approval; requirements depend on the actual request and reviewing provider.

Identify the activity that generated the money, explain how it reached the paying account, and provide the records requested for the purchase review.
A current balance alone may not explain the origin or movement of the purchase funds.

Three questions that require different evidence
QuestionWhat it asksIllustrative answer
Source of fundsWhere did this transaction's money come from?Savings accumulated from employment income
Source of wealthHow was the person's overall wealth accumulated?Employment, investments and other documented assets over time
Available balanceWhat money is currently available in the account? The amount shown by the bank at that time

The FCA's glossary distinguishes the origin of particular funds from the accumulation of total wealth. Its definition includes both the money-generating activity and the route by which funds were transferred. This is a useful terminology reference, not a statement that UK rules govern your U.S. purchase.

Saying the money is in my bank account identifies its current location. It may not explain whether it came from earnings, an investment sale or another event. Likewise, a payment receipt can show movement without explaining the original source.

Why might a Bitcoin provider ask for this information?

A provider may need to understand a transaction as part of its account or purchase review. Kraken's source-of-funds guidance describes requests for transaction-specific origin records and broader wealth information in its own process. A request for documents does not by itself mean wrongdoing.

One company's requirements are not another company's policy. Ask the provider handling your request what it is reviewing, which transaction or period the request concerns, and how to submit the information securely.

A completed identity check and an explanation of the purchase funds answer different questions. Neither establishes that a bank payment cleared or that Bitcoin has been delivered. Keep the review status separate from funding and delivery records.

An example: explaining savings used for a purchase

Imagine a hypothetical $6,000 purchase funded from savings built through salary payments. An organized explanation might identify the employment income, the savings account that accumulated it, and a later transfer to the account that will pay for the purchase.

The relevant records would need to support that explanation. If the provider requests evidence of the original income and the transfer between your accounts, a screenshot of the final balance alone may leave a gap. Ask which records and date range it needs rather than uploading an entire financial history.

If the $6,000 instead came from selling an investment, the explanation would concern that sale and the receipt of its proceeds. Do not label investment proceeds as salary just because both ended up in the same checking account.

These are teaching examples, not a list of documents Fiat2Bitcoin automatically accepts. The purpose is to make the source, movement and intended payment understandable without inventing missing details.

How to prepare for a source-of-funds document request

  1. Verify that the request belongs to the provider and purchase you initiated.
  2. Identify the specific amount, account, transaction or period the reviewer is asking about.
  3. Write a short factual explanation of how the money was generated and reached the paying account.
  4. Ask which documents, dates and fields are required to support that explanation.
  5. Confirm the approved upload channel and any permitted redactions before submitting.
  6. Keep a copy of what you submitted and the provider's acknowledgment, then follow the existing request.

Possible records depend on the source. A reviewer might ask about an employment payment, an asset-sale record or evidence showing proceeds reaching an account. Kraken's published examples illustrate that an origin document and a receipt record can answer different parts of the question; its accepted formats and time limits are specific to its own process.

Ask before cropping, redacting or omitting pages. Remove sensitive information only as the reviewing provider permits, without hiding required transaction facts. Never alter amounts, dates, account ownership or document contents. If an old record is unavailable, explain that and ask what alternative evidence is acceptable.

What should you check before sharing financial records?

Use an independently verified provider website or established secure submission channel. Do not upload statements through a link merely because an unexpected message says a purchase is urgent. Confirm the request through a contact route you already trust.

Ask what information is necessary and who is reviewing it. Keep bank-login passwords, one-time access codes, private keys and wallet recovery phrases out of document submissions. Those secrets are not evidence of the origin of funds.

If you are unsure why a document is requested, ask for clarification before disclosing additional records. Do not send unrelated family or third-party financial information simply to make an upload look more complete.

Does submitting documents mean you should send the payment?

No. A submission acknowledgment is not an approval or funding instruction. For Fiat2Bitcoin's planned wire process, wait for employee review and request-specific instructions, then use the wire-instruction verification checklist. The large-purchase preparation guide places this review in the full sequence.

For an ACH offer, follow the selected provider's current order and authorization process. The ACH debit-versus-credit guide explains why linking an account and authorizing a payment are separate questions.

Do not split a purchase or change the paying account to avoid a review. Ask what remains outstanding and when to follow up. There is no universal document-review deadline or automatic approval amount to infer from this guide.
