IMAD number: how to find and use a wire-transfer reference

A brass magnifying lens examines a blank three-part reference strip on a teal folio.

Short answer

IMAD stands for Input Message Accountability Data. It identifies a message sent through Fedwire and helps banks investigate a wire transfer. Request it from the sending bank along with the wire’s amount, date and status, then share the relevant record through the recipient’s verified support channel.

Find the bank reference you need, understand its parts and use it to move a wire investigation forward.

The recipient asks for an IMAD, while your banking app shows a confirmation number. Start by asking your bank which reference identifies the Fedwire message for that payment. A labeled record makes the next conversation much easier.

What is an IMAD number?

IMAD is short for Input Message Accountability Data. Federal Reserve Financial Services explains that successfully processed Fedwire messages contain both IMAD and OMAD identifiers. Banks use these references when following a payment through the wire system.

The term refers to a payment message. Keep the bank’s reference together with its explanation of the wire’s status: sent, under investigation, credited or returned, as applicable. That combination gives the receiving institution something specific to investigate.

For example, a bank may show an app confirmation when you submit a request and provide the wire-system reference later. Ask which record you have and which payment route it describes. The bank can match its own confirmation to the corresponding wire message.

What does an IMAD number look like?

An IMAD commonly appears as a date, an eight-character source identifier and a six-digit sequence. Kraken’s Fedwire reference guide shows these parts. Copy the actual reference exactly as your bank provides it, keeping leading zeros and letters intact.

Fictional teaching example: 20261030 DEMO0001 000123. Spaces separate the three parts here so you can read them. The example contains 22 characters when joined; DEMO0001 is a made-up source identifier. Use your bank’s record for a real investigation.

20261030Date componentThe complete date as supplied by the bank
DEMO0001Eight-character source identifierEvery letter and digit, including zeros
000123Six-digit sequenceAll six digits, including the leading zeros

If a receipt uses a different layout or label, send the bank the record and ask it to identify the field. Let the bank resolve formatting questions before you edit or shorten the reference.

How do you get the IMAD from your bank?

Open the original wire’s details and look for a receipt or tracking reference. Availability and labels depend on the bank. For instance, Mercury’s missing-payment guidance places domestic-wire tracking details on the transaction record and says tracking details are typically available after a payment has been sent.

If you cannot find the reference, contact the sending bank through its official support channel. Give it the payment date, amount, currency, recipient and the confirmation you already have. Ask for the IMAD and available OMAD for the particular Fedwire message. If needed, ask the representative to involve the wire department.

You can use this message: “Please confirm whether my wire dated [date] for [amount and currency], confirmation [reference], was sent through Fedwire. If so, please provide its IMAD, any available OMAD and the current payment status. The recipient needs the wire record to investigate receipt.”

How do you use an IMAD to trace a wire?

Send the relevant wire details to the intended recipient through its verified secure channel. Ask it to have its bank locate the incoming payment. Mercury’s guidance, for example, asks for the sending date, sender, amount and IMAD/OMAD when investigating an incoming domestic wire.

Ask the sending bank to investigate if the receiving side still cannot locate the wire. Federal Reserve Financial Services describes a bank investigation message used to confirm receipt and credit to the recipient. Request the bank’s case number, next follow-up date and outcome. Our wire-tracking checklist covers the wider follow-up process.

Can you look up an IMAD online?

Use your bank’s authenticated transaction record or ask its wire team to investigate the reference. For a payment sent to you, ask the sender to obtain that record from its bank. Public bank directories serve a different task: the Federal Reserve’s E-Payments Routing Directory supplies participating institutions’ routing information.

Match each reference to the system that issued it. IMAD and OMAD relate to Fedwire messages. An ACH trace number follows an ACH entry; the ACH trace-number guide explains how to request it. For a Swift payment, ask the bank for the applicable tracking reference, such as the Unique End-to-end Transaction Reference described by Swift. A payment can involve more than one system, so keep the bank’s labels with each reference.

Share wire records only with the banks and verified recipient support handling your payment. Keep banking passwords, one-time sign-in codes and wallet recovery phrases private. Use a secure upload process if support needs a receipt containing account details.

What is the difference between IMAD and OMAD?

IMAD identifies the input message; OMAD means Output Message Accountability Data and identifies the output message. The Federal Reserve lists both on successfully processed messages. Preserve the labels when your bank supplies them so the investigating institution can interpret the record.

To establish where the money is now, ask the bank to explain the latest payment status alongside those references. If the recipient has received it, ask whether it has been credited and matched to the intended account, invoice or order. If the bank reports a return, request its date and return reference.

How does an IMAD help with a wire-funded Bitcoin purchase?

An IMAD helps the banks follow the dollar transfer. The purchase provider uses its order reference to match that payment to your request. Once Bitcoin is sent, the crypto transaction record follows wallet delivery. Keep those records together, with a clear label for each stage.

The wire-transfer buying guide explains request-specific instructions, funding review, the final quote and wallet delivery. Fiat2Bitcoin’s public purchase service remains in launch preparation. For a payment through another provider, ask that company to resolve the existing wire and order before arranging a replacement payment.
