ACH return code R04: how to fix an invalid account number

A brass magnifying glass over empty account-number boxes on an ivory form.

Short answer

R04 means the bank returned an ACH entry because the account number’s structure was invalid. Get the ACH details directly from your bank, update them through the sender’s secure process, and confirm who will send the replacement.

Check the account number at its source and resolve the original payment before trying again.

You copied an account number into a payment form and the transfer came back as R04. Pull up the bank’s ACH instructions and compare them with what the sender used. Start with the account number, including any zeros at the beginning.

What does ACH return code R04 mean?

Nacha describes R04 as Invalid Account Number Structure. The account number in the entry failed a format check. With R03, the number can have a valid structure but the bank cannot match it to the intended person or an open account. R02 means the account had been closed.

The return code tells you where to start looking. Ask the sender for the exact code, payment amount and reference. Your bank can confirm the account number and routing number to use for ACH.

Example: a leading zero went missing

Imagine your bank shows an account number beginning with 0, but a spreadsheet drops that zero before payroll copies the number into its system. If the bank rejects the shortened format and returns R04, send payroll the corrected ACH details through its official portal.

Ask whether changing your direct deposit profile also fixes the returned paycheck. Payroll may need to reissue it separately. Keep the original payment reference and ask when to expect the replacement.

What to check before the payment is sent again

Use your bank’s official app, website or support number to confirm the ACH instructions for the account.

  1. Match the return to the original payment by its date, amount and reference.
  2. Get the account number, ACH routing number and account type from your bank. Copy every digit as shown, including leading zeros.
  3. Update the details in the sender’s verified portal or through its approved secure process. Ask whether it needs to verify the account or collect a new authorization.
  4. Confirm the original payment was returned and ask who will start the replacement. If a retry is scheduled, check which account it will use before sending a separate payment.
  5. Save the confirmation and check that the replacement posts to the intended account.

For a Bitcoin order, ask the provider whether you can retry the same order or need a new quote. The ACH return-code guide explains how to track the payment and order separately.
