ACH return code R09: what “uncollected funds” means and when to retry

Ivory tokens under a glass dome with two separate tokens on a brass tray.

Short answer

R09 means the ledger balance covered the ACH debit, but the available balance was too low because funds were still uncollected. Ask your bank when the funds will be available and confirm whether the biller plans to retry before sending another payment.

Check which funds were available when the debit reached your bank.

Your bank app shows enough money to cover a bill, yet the payment comes back as R09. Open the deposit details and look for a hold or an availability date. Then match the returned debit to the bill it was supposed to pay.

What does ACH return code R09 mean?

Nacha calls R09 Uncollected Funds. The account had enough money on its books to cover the debit, but some funds were still uncollected. A check deposit on hold can create that gap.

R01 is the insufficient-funds code. Both returns can involve too little money available for the debit, but R09 specifically points to uncollected funds behind a sufficient ledger balance. Ask the bank for the actual code and the balance it used at the time.

Example: a $200 balance with only $50 available

Suppose your ledger balance is $200 and includes a $150 check deposit that is still entirely on hold. With no other holds or pending charges in this example, that leaves $50 available. A $75 ACH debit arrives while the hold is in place, so the bank returns it as R09.

Look for the expected availability date on the deposit receipt or in the bank app. If the bank shows a partial release, check how much will become available and when. Once the hold lifts, check the available balance again and account for other payments you expect to post.

What to check before you pay again

The deposit release date and the biller’s retry date answer different questions. Confirm both before making a separate payment.

  1. Match the return to the original debit using its amount, date and reference.
  2. Ask the bank which deposit is on hold, how much remains unavailable and when the bank expects to release it.
  3. Ask the biller whether the original debit has been returned, whether it has scheduled a retry and when the bill is due.
  4. Check your available balance before the planned payment. If the biller asks you to pay manually, confirm how it will handle any scheduled retry and keep the receipt.

For a Bitcoin order, ask the purchase provider what happened to the original order and whether you need a new quote. The ACH return-code guide explains how to track the payment and the order separately.
