You asked a company to stop taking automatic payments, and a later debit comes back as R07. Pull up your cancellation email or confirmation first. The date, the company name and the scope of your request will help the bank and biller resolve it.
What does ACH return code R07 mean?
Nacha names R07 Authorization Revoked by Customer. The customer had given the company permission to debit the account and later withdrew that permission. Confirm the exact return code with your bank or payment provider and match it to the debit amount and date.
R08 covers a stop-payment order. If your bank used that code instead, the R08 guide explains what to check. Ask your bank which instructions it has recorded and whether it needs a form or written statement from you.
Example: stopping a gym’s monthly autopay
Suppose your gym takes $40 from your bank account each month. On October 20, you email the gym to withdraw permission for future automatic debits and save its confirmation. You also notify your bank. A November debit is attempted and returned as R07.
Ask the gym to confirm that autopay is turned off and explain any amount it still considers due under your membership agreement. If you also want to end the membership, follow its cancellation process and request the effective cancellation date. Revoking debit permission changes how payments can be collected; the membership agreement determines any remaining bill.
If you agree that a final $40 payment is due, arrange one payment method and keep the receipt. Ask the gym to confirm how it will handle the returned debit and future billing before you send that payment.
Your checklist after an R07 return
Use this list when you contact the company and your bank:
- Save the original debit details, return code and written revocation confirmation. Record when you contacted each party.
- Tell the company you withdrew debit permission. Follow up in writing and ask it to confirm that future automatic debits are stopped.
- Tell your bank or credit union that you revoked authorization. Follow its process and ask whether it recommends a stop-payment order and what that would cost.
- Ask the company for an itemized remaining balance and the status of any subscription or contract. Agree on how to pay an amount you accept as due.
- Monitor your account. Report any debit taken after revocation to your bank promptly and ask about its dispute process and deadlines.
What if you want to pay the company again?
Contact the company to arrange the next payment. If you want to restart autopay, ask for its authorization process and review the amount, frequency and start date before giving fresh permission. Keep the new confirmation with your records.
For a Bitcoin purchase, also ask the provider whether the original order is open, canceled or awaiting another action. Confirm the payment arrangement and any new quote before proceeding. The ACH return-code guide helps you track the bank payment and purchase order together.
