You asked your bank to stop an automatic utility debit while you reviewed the bill. The utility now shows R08 beside the payment. Use the amount, date and payment reference to match the return to that debit, then ask the utility what balance is still due.
What does ACH return code R08 mean?
R08 is the ACH return code for Payment Stopped. The bank returned the debit because a stop-payment instruction applied. Ask your bank which debit the instruction covered and whether it also affects future debits from the same biller.
The stop applies to the bank payment. Check your biller’s records for any remaining balance, the due date and the status of autopay. If you want to end recurring debits, follow the biller’s and bank’s instructions for revoking authorization and keep a record of your requests.
Example: a stopped $92 utility payment
Suppose you stop a $92 utility debit because you want to check an unusual charge. The bank returns the debit as R08. The utility confirms that it received the return, the $92 remains due, and there is no replacement scheduled.
If you agree with the balance and choose to pay manually, use the utility’s verified payment portal and save the receipt. Ask the utility whether autopay will still run next month. If the bill amount is still in dispute, ask how the utility is handling the balance and due date while it reviews the charge.
What to check before you pay again
Nacha’s guidance requires separate authorization from the account holder before a biller reinitiates a debit returned as R08. If you want to authorize another debit, confirm the amount and date with the biller and ask your bank whether the existing stop would still apply.
- Match the R08 return to the original debit by amount, date and reference.
- Ask the bank what the stop covers and whether it is still in effect.
- Ask the biller what you owe, when it is due and whether any payment is pending.
- Agree on one payment method and keep the confirmation. Review future autopay separately.
If this happened on a Bitcoin order, ask the purchase provider for the order status before submitting another payment. The ACH return-code guide explains how to track the bank debit and the order separately.
