ACH return code R10: how to handle an unauthorized debit

Short answer

R10 means the customer reports an unknown company or a debit the customer never authorized. Contact your bank promptly, identify the transaction and explain what you recognize and what permission you gave. Keep the bank’s case number and follow-up instructions.

An unfamiliar withdrawal is a reason to call your bank right away.

If you see R10 beside a returned payment, start by matching it to the original debit. If you’re looking at an unfamiliar withdrawal without a return code, report the transaction to your bank and let it determine the appropriate process.

What does ACH return code R10 mean?

R10 covers a customer’s report that the company initiating the ACH debit is unknown or that the customer never authorized that company to debit the account. It can involve a company the customer recognizes as well as an unfamiliar name.

Describe the facts to your bank. If you previously gave permission and then withdrew it, read the R07 guide. If you authorized the company but the amount or timing differed from the agreement, the R11 guide explains that situation.

Example: an unfamiliar $85 withdrawal

Suppose an $85 ACH debit appears in your personal checking account under a name you don’t recognize. Open the transaction details and save the date, statement description and any reference number. Check your recent receipts, but contact the bank promptly while you investigate.

Ask the bank to help identify the company and explain whether you ever permitted it to debit your account. If the name belongs to a processor for a purchase you recognize, compare the debit with that purchase’s authorization. Tell the bank what you find so it can investigate the right issue.

Example wording, if it matches your situation: “I’m reporting an $85 ACH debit dated November 3. The statement description is [description]. I don’t recognize this company or recall authorizing this withdrawal. Please help identify it and investigate. What is my case number, and what written information should I send?”

What to cover on the call

Use the phone number in your bank app, on your statement or on the bank’s official website.

  1. Identify the amount, date and exact statement description. Explain why you believe the debit was unauthorized.
  2. Ask for a case number and where to send supporting records. Keep a copy of everything you submit.
  3. Ask what steps can protect the account against further debits and how those steps will affect your legitimate bills.
  4. Confirm any written follow-up deadline, the investigation timeline and whether a temporary credit applies.
  5. Monitor the account and add any related debits to your report promptly.

How soon should you report it, and when will money come back?

Report suspected unauthorized withdrawals as soon as you notice them. For a personal account, the CFPB explains that you generally must notify the bank within 60 days after it sends the statement showing the unauthorized withdrawal. Lost cards or stolen access credentials can involve earlier reporting rules. Business-account procedures differ, so contact the bank immediately for those too.

A bank generally has 10 business days to investigate a consumer electronic-transfer error, with different timing for some new-account transactions. If it needs longer, temporary credit may apply, subject to the applicable conditions. Ask for the dates for your case and complete any requested written follow-up on time.

If the debit relates to a Bitcoin order, also ask the purchase provider for that order’s status. Use the ACH return-code guide to keep the bank case and purchase records together before arranging any further payment.
