You agreed to a bank payment, but the company took a different amount or collected it early. Gather the authorization and the debit details. Those two records give your bank a clear starting point.
What does ACH return code R11 mean?
R11 concerns a payment that differs from permission already given to the company. Nacha’s examples include an incorrect amount, an early debit and certain improperly submitted payments. Your bank determines the return reason from the circumstances.
If the concern is that you never gave the company debit permission, use the R10 guide. For a complaint about the product, service or purchase price, contact the seller under its dispute process and explain any separate payment error to the bank.
Example: you authorized $300, but $350 was debited
In this hypothetical example, you authorized a single $300 debit for November 10. The company debited $350 on November 10. The amount differs by $50. Save the authorization and statement entry, then report the discrepancy.
Scroll across the table to see all columns.
| Detail | Authorization | Bank entry |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | $300 | $350 |
| Date | November 10 | November 10 |
| Difference to explain | One $300 debit approved | $50 more than agreed |
Ask whether the company plans a partial refund or whether the bank is returning the full debit. If the full $350 is returned and a corrected $300 debit later posts, the net payment is $300: $350 out, $350 back, then $300 out. A partial $50 refund is a different sequence. Track the actual entries so you can spot a duplicate collection.
Check these details before paying again
Call the bank promptly and tell the company exactly which detail differed from your authorization.
- Find the authorization’s amount, payment schedule and any agreed variable-payment terms. Compare them with the actual debit.
- Give the bank the debit date, amount, reference and your explanation of the error. Ask how to submit the supporting records.
- Ask the company to confirm the correction in writing: a refund, a returned debit or a corrected new debit, including the amount and expected date.
- Before making a manual payment, ask whether a corrected debit is already scheduled. Agree on one collection method.
- Check the account afterward and keep the final payment confirmation with the original records.
Can the company submit a corrected debit?
Nacha allows a company to correct an eligible R11 error and submit a new debit that follows the original authorization, without obtaining a new authorization. Its guidance sets a 60-day window from settlement of the R11 return for that corrected entry. Confirm what the company plans so you can account for the payment.
For consumer electronic-transfer errors, Regulation E generally provides a reporting window of 60 days after the bank sends the statement first showing the error. That clock uses a different starting point from the ACH correction window. Report the problem promptly and ask the bank for your case’s follow-up requirements.
For a Bitcoin purchase, ask the provider how the payment correction affects the original order and quote. The ACH return-code guide explains the payment and order checks to make before another purchase.
