Wire transfer cutoff time: how to check your bank’s deadline

Short answer

A wire transfer cutoff is your bank’s deadline for sending a wire that business day. Check the cutoff and time zone for your account, destination and sending method. After a Friday cutoff, a wire queued for the next business day usually goes out Monday, or Tuesday if Monday is a banking holiday.

Find your deadline before you submit, and know what to check if the money has to arrive today.

You open your bank app late on Friday and it still lets you enter a wire. Before you hit Send, check the date the bank expects to release it. The app can accept a request today and schedule it for the next business day. This guide focuses on outgoing U.S. domestic wires.

What does the wire transfer cutoff mean?

The customer cutoff is the deadline your bank gives you to complete the steps for same-day sending. A wire can require recipient setup, identity verification, or a second approval before the bank releases it. If another person must approve it, ask whether their approval also has to be in before cutoff.

Fedwire has its own deadlines for banks. The Federal Reserve lists 6:45 p.m. Eastern for core customer transfers under its regular schedule. Your bank can set an earlier deadline to review and send the wire. Use the bank’s customer cutoff for your request.

Ask separately when the recipient will have access to the funds. A sending-bank receipt can show when the wire left, while the receiving institution can tell the recipient when the money is credited and available.

Friday afternoon example before and after cutoff

Suppose your bank’s online cutoff for outgoing domestic wires is 4:00 p.m. Eastern (3:00 p.m. Central). This is a fictional deadline. Imagine your recipient needs the money by the end of Friday.

What changes around a fictional Friday cutoff
When you finish submittingWhat to check
Friday at 3:40 p.m. EasternYou’re 20 minutes early. If the bank clears the request in time, it can send Friday. Check the release status and have the recipient confirm when they can use the funds.
Friday at 4:10 p.m. EasternYou’re 10 minutes late. If the bank schedules it for the next business day, expect a Monday send date in an ordinary week. Read the date on the confirmation.
After cutoff, with Monday a banking holidayThe next business day is normally Tuesday. If the recipient needs the money sooner, contact them before sending another payment. First confirm whether the original wire is queued, canceled or already released.

How to check your bank’s wire cutoff

Start in your bank’s official app or website. Open the wire section and select the account and destination you plan to use. Look for cutoff times in the help page, account agreement or review screen. If you’re going to a branch, ask for its wire deadline and whether you need an appointment.

  1. Match the wire type and channel. Look up outgoing domestic wires for this account and choose online, mobile, branch or business banking as applicable.
  2. Check the time zone and business-day calendar. Convert the cutoff to your local time and check whether the next weekday is a banking holiday.
  3. Ask what has to be complete by the deadline. Confirm whether the bank needs additional verification, an approval or a call before release.
  4. Read the scheduled send date on the review screen. If arrival is time-sensitive, ask the bank for the expected release date and ask the recipient when the funds need to be available.
  5. Save the confirmation and check the status. If it’s late, ask the sending bank whether it’s queued, under review or released, and request the tracking reference if it was sent.

If you need to call, use the number in your bank app or on your card. Try asking, “What time and time zone apply to an outgoing domestic wire from this account through this channel today? What has to be approved by then, and what date will you send it if I miss the cutoff?”

Where banks publish their wire deadlines

Bank of America lists 5:00 p.m. Eastern for same-business-day domestic outbound wires in its cutoff guide. Wells Fargo says it typically sends domestic digital wires the same business day when submitted by 3:00 p.m. Pacific. Those are examples for the published services. Check the review screen for your transfer, especially if you use a different account or send in a branch.

For a Bitcoin purchase, save the bank receipt and follow the purchase record for receipt, review and wallet delivery. The wire transfer pillar explains the purchase steps. If a wire was released and the recipient cannot find it, use the wire-tracking checklist.
