OTC Bitcoin: how large-purchase quotes work

Short answer

OTC Bitcoin means an over-the-counter trade arranged with a desk or counterparty outside a public exchange order book. Buyers commonly request a quote for a specific amount. The quote, funding, settlement and wallet delivery have separate conditions. OTC does not automatically mean a better price, anonymous trading or guaranteed completion.

Understand the quote before committing funds, and distinguish the way a trade is arranged from the way you pay for it.

If you are considering a large Bitcoin purchase by wire transfer, this guide explains questions that also arise in OTC offers. Fiat2Bitcoin remains prelaunch. Its planned reviewed-wire process is not a claim of an operating OTC desk, institutional liquidity or a guaranteed trade size.

A quote states proposed trade terms, funding moves the payment, and settlement and delivery complete their separate obligations.
A sent wire does not establish that a quote was accepted or that BTC was delivered.

What does OTC Bitcoin mean?

OTC stands for over the counter. Instead of placing your order directly into a public exchange order book, you arrange a trade through a desk or another counterparty. Kraken's OTC page describes trading off its open exchange and requesting a quote for a specified order.

An OTC desk is a service for arranging execution. A wire is a payment method for moving dollars. The two labels answer different questions, so sending a bank wire does not by itself make a purchase OTC.

The same distinction applies to an online checkout. An interface that shows one quoted price is not enough to tell you how the provider sources Bitcoin, whether it acts as your counterparty, or when your price becomes binding. Read the actual terms.

Compare the arrangement, not just the label
QuestionWhat to establish
How is the price obtained? An executable quote, an estimate or an exchange order
Who is responsible for the trade? The named legal counterparty and any separate service roles
When do you commit? The acceptance step and the conditions attached to it
How are dollars provided?Prefunding, later settlement or another agreed process
Where does BTC arrive? The agreed wallet or account and delivery conditions
What does it cost?Total dollars paid and net BTC delivered, including outside charges

There is no useful universal claim that OTC is always cheaper or always faster. An offer can depend on size, liquidity, location and the provider's terms. The relevant comparison is between actual eligible offers for the same intended purchase.

The complete purchase-fee guide covers rate spreads, service fees and bank charges. Keep those costs separate from this guide's main question: what event makes a quote an agreed trade?

When does an OTC quote become a trade?

The sequence varies. Strike's OTC explainer describes a prefunded process in which a customer requests a time-limited quote and chooses whether to accept it. Kraken describes both trader-assisted and automated quote workflows. These are attributed provider examples, not instructions or acceptance terms for Fiat2Bitcoin.

Ask whether the displayed number is only an indication, a firm offer that can still be accepted, or a record of a trade you have already accepted. Record the quote identifier, expiry and timezone. Do not assume that saving a screenshot extends its validity.

Also ask what happens if money arrives after a deadline, the accepted amount differs from received funds, or a review remains incomplete. A bank's sending confirmation cannot answer a question about the counterparty's quote policy.

Hypothetical example: you receive an estimate at 10:00, send dollars later that day and see a different price when funds become available. The first question is whether you accepted a binding quote under its terms before it expired. The age of the screenshot alone does not establish a price lock. Keep the estimate, acceptance record and payment reference so the provider can reconcile the sequence.

Is there a universal minimum for OTC Bitcoin?

No. Minimums and eligibility belong to the specific service and offer. A threshold mentioned on another provider's page is not a market-wide rule, and an OTC label is not a promise that a buyer or order will qualify.

For Fiat2Bitcoin's planned wires, the published fee tier is a pricing rule, not an approval threshold or minimum OTC order. Review the wire purchase page and fee policy. Do not apply those wire rates to Changelly card or ACH offers.

If you are still deciding how to fund a purchase, compare all four payment methods. A large intended amount alone is not a reason to accept unclear funding or delivery terms.

What should you get clear before funding?

  1. Counterparty: identify who owes you the Bitcoin and verify its contact channel independently.
  2. Quote: record the asset, BTC quantity, total dollars, expiry and exact acceptance step.
  3. Costs: establish which charges are included and which your bank or another party adds.
  4. Funding: confirm whose account may pay and the instructions for this particular request.
  5. Settlement: ask what must occur after payment arrives and whether any review remains.
  6. Destination: verify the full receiving address and supported network before accepting delivery terms.
  7. Uncompleted order: understand how the provider handles expired offers, rejected funding or a purchase that cannot proceed.

For request-specific bank details, use the wire-instruction verification checklist. For the surrounding preparation, use the large-wire purchase guide. Neither an OTC label nor a personal message replaces that verification.

The CFTC's virtual-currency advisory recommends checking a platform's legitimacy before wiring money or providing sensitive information. A promise of a guaranteed return is a different claim from a quoted purchase price.

After execution, retain the agreed terms and delivery reference. Our Bitcoin transfer-time guide explains the network stage after BTC is sent. If your concern is the value of what you buy, read whether Bitcoin can become worthless before funding.
