For the wider terminology, our types-of-Bitcoin guide separates assets from units and account formats. If both sides already specify native BTC, check Taproot versus native SegWit for the address-format question.
Before choosing a Bitcoin purchase method, establish what you intend to receive. A dollar payment route does not resolve wallet compatibility. Fiat2Bitcoin remains prelaunch; this guide does not announce wrapped-token purchases, swaps, bridges or recovery services.
Native BTC and wrapped Bitcoin are different assets
Native BTC exists on the Bitcoin network. A wrapped token represents Bitcoin through a separate arrangement on another network. Similar names or a price linked to Bitcoin do not make their transfer instructions interchangeable.
WBTC and Coinbase Wrapped BTC, commonly written cbBTC, are different products. WBTC's official transparency page lists its token networks and reserves. Coinbase's wrapped-asset documentation describes its own supported assets and networks. Support for one product is not evidence of support for the other.
The Ethereum version of a token uses that network's token system. Ethereum's ERC-20 documentation explains how token contracts track and transfer tokens. That mechanism does not turn a token transfer into a native Bitcoin transaction. Do not treat a backing claim as a guarantee about redemption, fees or recovery.
Match the asset, network and receiving instructions
Scroll across the table to see all columns.
| Proposed delivery | Required receiving support | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Native BTC on Bitcoin | Native BTC on Bitcoin, with a fresh verified receive address | Check the complete address and provider conditions |
| WBTC on Ethereum | That WBTC token on Ethereum | A native Bitcoin receive address is not compatible |
| cbBTC on Base | cbBTC on Base | Do not substitute WBTC, Ethereum or Bitcoin instructions |
| An app labeled Bitcoin wallet | Exact asset and network shown in its receive screen | The app label alone is insufficient |
A multi-asset wallet can show several balances in one interface. That convenience does not create a single address for every asset and network. Open the receive screen for the intended asset, verify the network and compare the full address with the purchase or withdrawal screen.
A QR code only encodes information; it does not certify that you selected the right asset or network. Likewise, an address accepted by a form is not proof that the receiving service will credit the transfer.
What should you check when buying Bitcoin with dollars?
- Read the asset name and ticker in the offer. If your goal is native Bitcoin, clarify any WBTC, cbBTC or other wrapped-token label before paying.
- Read the delivery network separately. A lower network fee does not make an incompatible network suitable.
- Open the matching receive screen in a trusted wallet or service you control, then verify the full destination address.
- Check the receiving service's current asset/network support, deposit minimums and any special instructions.
- Retain the accepted offer and delivery reference. Verify the actual receipt rather than relying on the dollar-payment confirmation.
These checks apply whether an eligible purchase uses a debit card, credit card, ACH bank payment or wire transfer. Those pages explain payment requirements; they do not promise support for a particular wrapped asset.
If two screens disagree, stop and ask the purchase provider and receiving service to clarify the exact pair of asset and network. Do not guess that a familiar Bitcoin logo overrides the written details.
Does sending wrapped Bitcoin automatically unwrap it?
Only a service with an explicitly supported process can provide that outcome under its own terms. Coinbase Exchange, for example, documents conversion of supported Coinbase wrapped-asset deposits into the corresponding underlying balance. That product-specific process is not a feature of every wallet, exchange or WBTC deposit.
If you already hold a wrapped token and want native BTC, establish an eligible conversion or redemption route with the relevant service before moving it. Check both the accepted deposit and the final withdrawal asset/network, together with any minimum, fee and identity requirements. No conversion provider is recommended or promised here.
A test amount is not a workaround for unsupported instructions. Even a small incompatible transfer can be lost. Resolve support first, and never share a wallet recovery phrase or private key with someone offering to unwrap or recover funds.
What if you already sent it to the wrong destination?
Do not repeat the transfer. Record the asset, network, transaction ID, destination address, amount and time from the sending service. Open support through the receiving service's verified app or website and ask whether it supports the actual token/network combination and whether any recovery is possible.
A recovery outcome depends on the actual transfer and who controls the destination; it cannot be promised from a screenshot or ticker alone. Bitcoin.org explains that confirmed Bitcoin payments cannot simply be reversed. A bank-payment investigation does not itself reverse a blockchain transfer.
If the provider reports that delivery is still pending, follow the pending Bitcoin purchase checklist to identify the stage. Keep the payment, order and blockchain records separate so each party can investigate its part.
